North Country River Charters

Bill and Pat have been in Alaska for almost 25 years. You will fish for some of the largest pike in the world along the Yukon River. You will depart from Fairbanks by air to a Yukon River village where North Country’s guides will meet you for a boat trip on the mighty Yukon River.

Yukon River Northern Pike - You will fish for some of the largest pike in the world along the Yukon River. Our clients have a 100% success rate for fish over 40" and almost the same rate for fish from 45-50". You will depart from Fairbanks by air to a Yukon River village where North Country’s guides will meet you for a boat trip on the mighty Yukon to the home of what may be the best fishing for trophy Northern Pike on the planet. The trip on the Yukon is spectacular with wilderness vistas around every corner. Bears and moose are seen on most trips and are frequently viewed while fishing this fabulous wilderness drainage. On the trip on the Yukon, we may even pass the spectacular Palisades, a fascinating section of high bluffs on the river. These cliffs are constantly eroding and exposing large numbers of Mastodon bones. Thousands of years ago, many Mastodons gathered at this spot and died, leaving an archeological treasure of bones and tusks. We pass slowly through the Palisades to see if we can glimpse a special part of history. Locals say that on a still day, you can smell the ancient animals along these bluffs. Very exciting! Ike and Sheefish are huge and eager to take your fly or bait. Northerns bigger than 45 inches are common. These are true giants with fish 25 to 30 pounds available in good numbers. This area will likely produce the new Alaska record in the next few years. Sheefish travel in large numbers and when feeding, will attack lures like no other fish. They are typically called Tarpon of the North and fight like true champions. Minto Flats Northern Pike - For those that want great Alaskan Pike fishing, but do not have the time to enjoy the Yukon River, we offer local pike fishing trips. Our trips leave Nenana and fish for a full eight hours. You can expect to catch fish in the 25-40 inch range and lots of them. These trips are very popular and offer the fishermen an exciting and safe jet boat ride into an area of unbelievable wilderness beauty. The fishing is excellent and you very often will encounter wild game of every kind. Beavers, River Otters, swans, and larger game such as lynx, bear and moose are frequently enjoyed as we quietly slide through the waters. This is great fun for the whole family in our large covered and heated boats no matter what the weather. NCRC guides are all true professionals with coast guard licenses and fishing credentials proven over many years of Alaskan experience. Duck Hunting - Join us on the fabulous Minto Flats for spectacular wing shooting for ducks and geese. Hunters will enjoy endless ducks and geese hunting from blinds placed on the flats where literally millions of ducks and geese nest. Shooting limits are liberal and allow you to choose your birds as Mallards, Pintails, widgeon, and teal are plentiful on the flats. As the migration gets in motion, the skies are full of birds heading south and the area is replenished with new birds coming off the breeding grounds of the north slope. North Country River Charter guides scout the areas for the best spots to construct blinds and hunters can expect to be placed in a new prime spot each day with a spread of decoys and plenty of birds. Once you have your limit for the day, you may want to enjoy some fishing for Northern Pike, which grow large in this remote wilderness.
Bill and Pat O'Halloran, Owners and Operators - Bill and Pat have been in Alaska for almost 25 years. They have a love of the outdoors and a passion to share it with folks from all around the world. Bill has always been an avid outdoorsman and has enjoyed hunting and fishing around the planet. Bill had a very enjoyable career as a military pilot and together he and Pat have circled the globe. He is rated as a commercial pilot, flying both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft and has extensive experience flying all over the wonderful wilderness of Alaska. Pat is truly the driving force that makes the business work and she runs the office and keeps the books. She is an expert on Alaska as well and has certainly caught her share of huge fish around the state. Bill frequently watches when Pat is along, as he knows from experience that she will likely be the one who gets the top trophy! Pat occupies much of her spare time enjoying our two wonderful twin grand children and our incredible daughter, Dana. You can read about Dana's husband below. Bill and Pat have a son, Brian, who lives in Anchorage and is an avid duckhunter. He will also be a familiar face in the fabulous new duck camps in the interior.
Roger Fleming, Chief Fishing Guide and Hunting Manager - Roger is one of the best of the best when it comes to knowledge of wilderness fishing and hunting in Alaska. He has lived in Alaska for many years and works for North Country River Charters year round. He has intimate knowledge of the business and possesses the people skills necessary to have folks smiling every day! Roger runs the crews and always makes sure every detail is taken care of. Roger too, had a military career and rose to the very top of his field. He has the experience and education to keep everything running smoothly and provide the utmost in adventure.
