Dear Sportsman:
Arranging for a big game hunt is perhaps in some ways like making any other purchase. However, there are some very important considerations that make it unique. It goes without saying that if price is your only criteria, then sooner or later you are in for a disappointment-or worse.
Take a look at advertisements in the outdoor magazines, or attend any sports show. The choice and the claims of excellence are simply mind-boggling. How is one to decide where or with whom one wants to go-short of flipping a coin or throwing darts at the program? It is indeed bewildering. The old sayings, such as "Buyer Beware," "You only get what you pay for," and, the one I like best, "Paper will never refuse ink," are all valid.
Beyond the wild claims and the salesmanship, in my estimation, there are a handful of questions that I would want answered if I were thinking of spending a considerable amount of money, and visiting an unknown area.
How long have you been in this business?
Is this how you make your living?
Are you or a family member or a trusted representative going to be there when I get off the plane?
I would want these questions answered before I went checking the record books, the references or the price. These are the things that determine whether or not you get back alive, have a successful experience and remember your hunt as one of the "good ones."
