Ospray charters has delivered quality guided sportfishing adventures out of the Tofino / Clayoquot Sound area on the West Coast of Vancouver Island since 1987. We offer unparalleled angling experiences and breathtaking scenery that you can drive to. Besides the great fishing for chinook (king) and coho (silver) salmon we also target on halibut and bottomfish plus river fishing for steelhead.
Ospray Charters - Salmon Program:
Our season starts in March fishing for feeder (blackmouth) Chinook Salmon in protected inlets near large herring populations returning to spawn. These fish are generally 5 to 10 lbs. with some to the mid 20 lb. range.
Usually during May we can consistently get offshore to the baitfish rich banks for migrating Chinook (King) Salmon 15 to 40 lbs. This fishing usually last through July.
Starting mid July through late September we mostly fish close to shore along kelp beds or in bays for the largest fish of the year - 20 to 30 lb. average up to 60 lbs. as they're heading for their natal rivers. All ocean fishing is done from safe, comfortable cruiser style boats equipped with convertible soft tops and toilets. We use electric downriggers for trolling but offer the light tackle, cut plug, mooching option in season as well as jigging.
Ospray Charters - Halibut & Bottomfish:
Migrating Halibut begin showing up in our area in March , attracted by the spawning herring and can be caught in protected waters thru April. Calmer seas in May allow access to offshore areas where this fishery peaks inJune but they can be caught at most times. These flounders average around 30 lbs. with fish to 50 lbs. not uncommon but fish over 200 lbs. have come from our waters.
Our basic techniques for Halibut are drifting over their holding areas bottom bouncing a variety of baits (herring, squid, octopus, or mackeral) or jigging with lead lures. This jigging is also used for bottom fishing, usually a little closer to shore than for Halibut. When bottomfishing we target red snappers and Ling Cod but always catch a mix of the other 26 varieties of Rock Cod or Sculpins.
Ospray Charters - Steelhead Program:
Boat Fishing - This is the most efficient and comfortable way to access and fish the most productive waters. This method is used on larger rivers that have difficult or private access and high water makes wading dangerous. The Stamp / Somass system is located in central Vancouver Island near Port Alberni and is the Island's most productive river according to Ministry of Environment Statistics. This winter run begins late November, peaks in January and tapers off through February. We offer day trips aboard a heated 16 ft. aluminum jet boat or a 15 ft. aluminum drift boat. The Cowichan River is located near Duncan on Southern Vancouver Island. This fast flowing river has poor access for bank anglers but is perfectly suited for driftboats as powerboats are banned on the Cowichan. This river produces most of our largest fish of the year as well as a good population. This run starts mid January but usually isn't fishable (due to high and turbid water) until late February and provides great fishing through March and April.
Remote Steelhead Salmon - This program concentrates on the clear coastal streams in Clayoquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Most access is by ocean boat or floatplane out of Tofino with either hiking or land based vehicles on the rivers. We have two distinct seasons for this fishery October through early December we fish for summer / fall run Steelhead. Our best quality fishing is for fresh run spring Steelhead which starts in early March and runs through late April.
