Plummers Lodges

Without exception, Northwestern Ontario is one of the most beautiful areas in the world, and we are part of it. We are in an area of hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams surrounded by beautiful pine and hardwood forests abundant with wildlife—a far cry from the cities and towns most of us come from.

Canyon Lake itself is a beautiful clear water glacial lake accented with islands and bays. The surrounding terrain goes from gently sloping shoreline to sheer rock cliffs.

The lake is approximately 15 miles long and from it’s narrowest point of 100 yards to 2 miles wide, with depths ranging from a few feet in some of the shallow weedy bays to 100 feet at the deepest point which accounts for little or no fish kill due to extreme weather conditions hot or cold. For the fishing enthusiast there are weed beds, miles of rocky shoreline with scattered fallen trees, rock structure in abundance throughout the lake, providing the ultimate in Muskie, Bass and Walleye fishing.

Most Ontario lakes have good Walleye fishing and Canyon Lake is no exception. Average size around 1 ½ to 2 lbs. With many much bigger, some going over 10 lbs.

For Smallmouth Bass fishing we have one of, if not the best, lakes around. Pound for pound the Smallmouth is a battler that knows no equal. His seeming readiness to do battle when other species are playing hard to get can change an otherwise slow day of fishing to one of real excitement.

Most fishermen consider Smallmouth in the 3-4 lb. range (which are caught quite frequently throughout the season)- real wallhangers. Add to this the 5-6 lb. plus lunkers out there and you have some great fishing. The Muskie, much sought after by many fishermen, calls Canyon Lake his home and he is here in large numbers. You will have to look long and hard to find a better Muskie lake anywhere, if one exists.

Muskies in the 15-20 lb. range are common, with fish in the 35-40 lb. range being caught each year. Plus- you always have the chance of catching that ‘monster’ that everyone dreams of.

Following a week’s trip to Canyon Lake Lodge, published in the West Virginia Gazette was the story of Danny Cunningham and Glen Drake who raised 35 Muskies in 1½ hours. The plentiful Muskies are the reason why over the years manufacturers have come to Canyon Lake to test their lures.

Including Blyths Canyon Lake Lodge there are only three resorts and a few private cottages on the lake so there’s plenty of peace and quiet and little competition for the fisherman.

This is a quiet spot located 18 miles from the nearest town of Vermilion Bay and 3 miles off Route 647 (black top road).

In the town of Vermilion Bay there are churches, shopping facilities, gift shops, Laundromats, restaurants, bait shops, etc.

It gives you privacy away from the usual rush of traffic and everyday living. We try to make your days here something to remember pleasantly when you get back home "something to really talk about with your friends" just a carefree vacation. Whether it be fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, swimming or just plain relaxing—we have it here at Blyth's Canyon Lake Lodge.

In all honesty, I would say your chances of catching a Muskie here on Canyon Lake are greater than anywhere else. (Due to the ‘catch and release’ program many Muskies are returned to the lake to fight again.

Other species of fish are Perch, Cisco and Whitefish which supply a good food base for game fish in the lake. The latter of which (Whitefish) can be caught in May and early June, and is excellent broiled or smoked.

For those who would like a change of scenery and great fishing we keep boats at all times on portage lakes for Trout, Muskie, Northern and Walleyes. Most of the time you probably will have these lakes completely to yourself. As most of you fishermen know, in this area mid-August through September can account for some of the year’s best fishing and biggest fish. Check your calendar and give fall fishing a try. It can be great!
