FISHING:
Generation after generation, kids have enjoyed fishing. Remember the first time you went fishing? Bring some tradition to your family this year -- come fishing at Rainbow!
Spend a day on the water, playfully wetting a line, or avidly angling for abundant sportfish in "some of the most productive waters in Ontario" (MNR, Otonabee River/Rice Lake).
We offer many species close at hand. Kids of all ages enjoy the bluegill, sunfish and perch that can be found right at the end of our docks! Anglers enjoy the quality largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye (pickerel), panfish (bluegill, perch, rockbass and crappie) and the largest game-fish, the muskie. British anglers have discovered the lure of carp fishing from the banks of the Otonabee, landed and live-released carp have topped 30 lbs.
For those who enjoy superior comfort while fishing, we also offer completely equipped bass and pontoon boats. Cottage rental packages also include a boat and motor package - this is a 14' aluminum boat, with a 9.9hp electric-start motor including one tank of gas and boat cushions. The Bass Boat is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and is 17', with trolling motor, live wells, fish finder (all the "toys") and is powered by a 60 hp motor. The Pontoon Boat is often used for touring the area and has a suntop, radio and many seating areas, good for larger groups (up to 7) or families with children (because of the railings).
Walleye are easily found in the River in the spring, we recommend trolling with rapalas with a considerable weight (1.5 oz) or drifting with ice-fishing jigs. As the water warms and summer approaches, walleye are found mornings and evenings feeding at the mouth of the River (only 5 minutes away) and in the Lake. Trolling in the channel with rapalas is a good tactic. Through July and August walleye are most often found in deeper holes and chasms (some to 30'), sometimes among the weeds feeding. During the warmer months use a pickerel rig tipped with worms. Into the fall walleye once again begin to feed at the mouth of the River and then begin their trek upriver in late October. Pickerel rigs still work and trolling is once again a good option.
Bass are found in the weed beds in the Lake during July and August. Smallmouth bass are quite often found across the River from us, feeding against an underwater ledge. Overhanging structures and underwater shelters are good places to look for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Good baits include weedless hooks and jigs, surface-water, worms, crayfish and frogs.
Panfish and Bluegill are found in 4'-6' of water in June and July. They spread out a bit as the water warms. Good baits include wax worms and meal worms, small pieces and small hooks work best.
Muskie are generally easiest to land in the late fall - October and November. A faster trolling speed is recommended, with a very large artificial bait.
Carp can be found in the main River channel, in manners very similar to those used in the channels in England. We can arrange bait (maize, wheat, kernel corn, oilcake, etc.) from local suppliers.
